A New Front Opens in the Russia-Ukraine Conflict: Borscht

“A lot of things were taken away from Ukraine, but they will not take our borscht,” said a chef who is leading a drive to recognize the soup as a Ukrainian cultural heritage.

A year ago, the Russian government posted in English on its Twitter account a recipe proclaiming that “borscht is one of Russia’s most famous and beloved dishes.”

Even the Soviet classic cookbook, “The Book of Tasty and Healthy Food,” first published in 1939 under Stalin, does not describe borscht as Russian. It has only one recipe for the soup indicating a national origin, and that is for “Ukrainian borscht.” The others are specialized versions with mushrooms or low in fat, of unspecified origin.

Adding to the confusion, Russians seeking to lay claim to borscht’s origins sometimes cite an entirely different soup that was made in medieval times in Russia from wild hogweed grass and a light beer made from fermented bread. It, too, was called borscht, and is mentioned in a 16th-century Moscow book of advice about home life, “Homemaker.”

“By the culinary canon, borscht is a Ukrainian tradition,” Mr. Alyoshin said, surrendering without a fight. “If we talk about shchi, a similar dish, it is more Russian.”

US Cyber Command expands operations against Russia, China and Iran

US competitors have been busy while Americans were distracted by morning tweet storms, impeachment and a President's musings on injecting disinfectant. China has consolidated its Asian power base and is flexing its weight globally. The European Union is beginning to envision a world not guaranteed by US power. And Russia will make mischief wherever it can.

"We are going to win the state of Michigan so easy," said the President, before going on to tout the "incredible" job he had done in handling the pandemic and listing a litany of complaints about the Russia investigation, former FBI director James Comey and Capitol Hill Democrats.

A host of high-drama international issues are unresolved: The future of NATO is uncertain. Humanity's most pressing existential need, curbing climate change, is struggling to get off the ground. Iran and North Korea are yet to be coaxed toward concessions on potentially dangerous nuclear development. Russia is poisoning who it wants, when it wants, with impunity. And conflict with China that could envelop the world continues to escalate.



His early months in office were characterized by chaos at the State Department, as then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson hollowed out the diplomatic behemoth. Even Russian diplomats complained they no longer knew who to call.
Trump could have used the State Department's intellectual heft as Putin ran rings round him. At their first encounter at the 2017 Hamburg G20 meeting, the Russian leader suckered Trump into believing his proposal for a Syria ceasefire. Trump fell for one of the Kremlin's oldest military ploys, freezing the conflict so that it could finish it off bit by bit at Russia's convenience.
Although Trump would later sanction Russia over Ukraine and expel 60 Russia diplomats for Moscow's use of a deadly nerve agent against a former Russian agent in the UK, Trump never got ahead of Putin on big foreign policy issues after falling behind in Hamburg.

We also can't rule out the ability of our adversaries to change Americans' opinions about candidates. In September, Wray testified that "this year's election cycle, amid the Covid-19 pandemic, provides ample opportunity for hostile foreign actors to conduct disinformation campaigns and foreign influence operations in an effort to mislead, sow discord, and, ultimately, undermine confidence in our democratic institutions and values and in our government's response to our current health crisis." He has also stated that the FBI has seen "very active efforts by the Russians to influence our election in 2020." There have also been indications that Iran and China are also working to influence public opinion to varying degrees.

This doesn't mean, however, that foreign agents won't still be hard at work in the days ahead. Intelligence and law enforcement professionals have been tracking threats from adversaries including Russia, Iran, and China. And we have domestic concerns to worry about too, especially from violent extremists, lone wolf attackers, or militia groups who may feel encouraged by Trump's rhetoric.

Cyberattacks are a concern in the run up to the election and as votes are being counted and certified, foreign adversaries may try to compromise or disrupt infrastructure related to the election and may also try to hack political parties, campaigns and their affiliates to get information they can leak. These cyberattacks are nothing new. Chinese hackers compromised the computer networks of candidates Barack Obama and John McCain in the 2008 election cycle, Russia successfully hacked Democratic targets in 2016 and we have indications that they are still at it. Microsoft indicated that these nations, along with Iran, have tried to hack people and groups connected to the election. Google, too, has said that hackers targeted both 2020 presidential campaigns.
Cyberattacks against election infrastructure are ongoing. Russian hackers targeted the networks of dozens of state and local governments and stole data from at least two servers. A Department of Homeland Security threat assessment warns that Russia, "which possesses some of the most sophisticated cyber capabilities in the world, -- can disrupt or damage US critical infrastructure networks via cyberattacks."

"Да они только о России в своих америках и говорят" - это означает, что не видеть невозможно. Раз не вижу, значит утверждение ложно, а не нет новостей про Россию. Естественно, новости про Россию есть, но уж точно не только о России у них там новости, Россия где-то на 10 месте, может быть...

Мне больше выборы в Белоруссии понравились. Точнее их последствия. Лукашенко скоро додавят, интересно наблюдать. А что там в США как-то все равно...

Так последствия там были не во время подсчётов.

В США почта жалуется, что из за сокращения финансирования, они потеряли 300 тыс что ли бюллетеней ) и не могут найти.

А ещё по спискам всех ли кого могли собрали, будут ли проверять те кто никогда не голосовал довнесли ли их в списки?

А ещё посмотреть бы результаты как голосуют казармы и дурки, есть у них дурки? вроде как нет, может из больниц как народ голосует, а то избрали одного, а он как месяц назад кони двинул от эпидемии. Вот как считать тех кто откинулся после того как проголосовал? раз отправил молодец?

кого выбрали откинувшиеся, есть статистика? будет? ) никак не проверить? злой я (

А будут ли графики строить как строили после российских выборов, прямо университеты мат анализа работали, для определения отклонение от нормалей.
